While players can choose strategies in Expeditions: Rome, Commanders (Centurions) are needed on the field to execute them. The choice of which commanders to pick and why can be difficult, but some commanders are definitely better than others.

First and foremost, you should never choose a less than Indifferent Commander. Avoid Disgruntled or even a Hesitant Commander at all costs. Choose any of thePleased Commanders, preferablyInfantryfor the first one.

Every character, no matter how small, reacts to your actions. If they already dislike the way you behave this early on, they will only grow to hate you more over time and that can result in revolt.

The game advises picking until you have all four specializations, but you shouldn’t do that. All you really need is one commander at first. You don’t need to worry about the cost, as even the most expensive commanders are still incredibly cheap.
