If you’re looking to take your angling in a different direction in Terraria, then you’re likely wondering what you’ll need to fish in lava! This method of fishing has been improved significantly in the new 1.4 Journey’s End update, so you will really want to verify that you take advantage of this strange ability.

Fishing in Lava in Terraria

To fish in lava in Terraria you will either need a special fishing rod, hook, or some critters that can withstand being cast into the hot magma. We’ll take a look at all of these options and how you can get them below.

Fishing Rod

If you want a fishing rod that can withstand the fiery liquid then you will need to obtain theHotline Fishing Hookfishing pole. This pole can only be obtained in Hardmode from the Angler after completing 25 quests. It has a very low chance of being obtained, so you will need to likely complete a ton of quests because it’s reportedly a 1/150 chance.

Fishing Hook

TheLavaproof Fishing Hookis a new accessory that can be obtained in an Obsidian or Hellstone Crate. The problem is that you need to be able to fish in lava to get one of these crates! So, you will either need the Hotline Fishing Hook pole or you will need to use the critter method. The good part about this hook is that you may use any fishing pole to fish in lava, so you won’t need to do all those quests. Once you have one of these, you won’t need to bother catching lava critters anymore since they’re pretty rare anyway.

Critters

The first thing you want to do to catch lava critters is to obtain theGuide To Critter Companionship. This item prevents you from dealing damage to critters while it is in your inventory. This can be purchased from the Zoologist. You don’t want to accidentally kill them because they are pretty rare to spawn in the Underworld. If you have a summoned minion, or you’re just fighting things in general they might get caught in the crossfire.

Here’s a list of the critters you are looking to find:

To catch these little guys, you will need to get yourself aLavaproof Bug Net. To craft one of these you will need a regularBug Netand 15Hellstone Bars.

You can attach these critters to any fishing rod and it will now be able to fish in lava. Keep in mind that the lower rank the pole you use, the slower the fishing will end up being. These bugs don’t have a high bait power, so catching things will take time.

Lava Pools

Once you have your lava fishing methods of choice, you will now need a suitable pool of it. This does not need to be deep underground, you’re able to make yourself a pool near your base if you’re crafty enough. However, if you don’t have this ability you will need to locate an option that is deep enough.

What Can I Catch in Lava?

You can catch a couple of different types of fish:Flarefin Koi,Obsidifish, and theObsidian Swordfish(hardmode). The Obsidifish can be used to craft Inferno Potions and Potions of Return. You will need a Flarefin Koi as well to complete an Inferno Potion. The Obsidian Swordfish is actually used as a weapon and has one of the second-highest base damages of any spear. It can only be caught when using one of the lava critter baits described above.

you’re able to also get a Lava Absorbent Sponge, if you are lucky enough to snag one. The other thing you can catch in the lava is crates! You can catch theObsidian Cratenormally, and theHellstone Cratewhen you’re in hardmode.
