Blocking can be done while standing and crouching, but be aware that low attacks and throws will counter standing blocks, while overhead attacks can counter crouching blocks. The most effective way to block is to watch the opponent’s moves closely and block once they attack. This will prevent the enemy from knowing what block counters to use.
Blocking does not prevent all incoming damage, so be careful if your health is low, the enemy may be able to take out the last sliver even if you are blocking. Mastering when to block and when to avoid attacks is difficult, but will make a huge difference when playing online or trying to defeat enemies with pesky moves and combos.
Many powerful moves and combos will leave the character open to counters if the moves are blocked. If you can time the combos and correctly position yourself to block the moves, you can quickly unleash an attack before they can put up their guard.
